Filmmaker’s Challenge: Capturing the Thrill of Sports for the Audience

Ehsan Haddadi, the Head of the Athletics Federation and Olympic vice champion in discus throwing, emphasized the importance of creating sports films that truly immerse the audience in the athlete’s experience. In an interview with Saba Cinema, Haddadi shared his thoughts on the current state of sports films in the country.

“Throughout my years in championship sports, I have yet to see a film that effectively stimulates the viewer’s senses and allows them to experience the emotions of the athletes,” Haddadi remarked. “When a champion competes and wins a medal at the Olympics, spectators feel a unique connection to that athlete. Unfortunately, this feeling is often missing in existing sports films.”

Haddadi stressed the need for filmmakers to accompany athletes to world and Asian championships. “By being present with the champions, filmmakers can capture the pride and excitement of these events, conveying these emotions to the audience through their films.”

Reflecting on past experiences, Haddadi mentioned the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where a film crew was present but could not complete their documentary due to budget constraints. “Financial issues are a constant challenge in our country. We need to believe in long-term investments to reap the benefits in the future.”

Haddadi, who has a keen interest in photography and filmmaking, expressed his hope for the upcoming Paris Olympics. “I have watched many sports documentaries, and I hope we can produce a distinctive work in athletics that places the viewer in the athlete’s shoes. I believe that capturing the essence of these competitions will bring joy to the people.”

He concluded by highlighting the importance of having a dedicated team for the Paris Olympics. “If we can send a team to Paris to document and convey the athletes’ experiences, it will be a significant achievement.”

The 14th edition of the Iran International FICTS Festival, supported by the National Olympic Committee, the Ministry of Sports and Youth, the National Paralympic Committee, Tehran Municipality, IRIB, and the Iranian Organization of Cinema and Audiovisual Affairs of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, will be held in October this year.
